Portland tests post-earthquake disaster communication sites

On May 22 the Portland Bureau of Emergency Management (PBEM) tested 48 new Basic Earthquake Emergency Communication Node (BEECN) sites throughout the city. BEECNs are temporary places to go for emergency assistance and information during a post-earthquake disaster if phones and email aren't working. At these sites, you can report medical needs and severe damage to BEECN workers who will use radios to relay calls for help to first responders. Visit www.publicalerts.org/earthquake for more information about BEECNs, to find a site near you, download a handy postcard size BEECN map, get smartphone apps and more.

Oregon Resilience Plan outlines earthquake risks and makes recommendations for strengthening infrastructure resources in Oregon

Coinciding with the second anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, and three days prior to a legislative presentation, March 14, at the State Capitol in Salem, experts formally issued the Oregon Resilience Plan (executive summary). The plan was developed after Oregon legislators asked the Oregon Seismic Safety Policy Commission (OSSPAC) to draft a plan to help prepare Oregon for a potential large earthquake and tsunami. "We have drafted a plan and now it will be up to the elected officials, local communities and business leaders to put it to work," says Jay Wilson, hazard mitigation coordinator for Clackamas County Emergency Management and OSSPAC vice chair. The legislative presentation on March 14 will take place at the Joint Veterans and Emergency Committee from 1-3:00 p.m. in Hearing Room A.
DOGAMI maps used for Newport's South Beach Peninsula Tsunami Interpretive Trail

DOGAMI's lidar-based, state-of-the-art tsunami evacuation maps for Newport are highlighted in the trail signs. Eight trail signs were installed in late January along the multi-use path, and two more signs were installed at the Oregon Coast Aquarium. These interpretive signs alert those working, playing, or residing in the tsunami inundation zone to the potential danger and evacuation route to follow. This collaborative effort involved the Oregon Sea Grant team, the facilities team at Oregon State University/Hatfield Marine Science Center, Oregon Emergency Management, the City of Newport, and Newport Police.
