The map will run on the Macintosh operating system, but users of Apple iOS devices (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad) will need to obtain a Flash-enabled, third-party browser such as Skyfire or Puffin. Note that DOGAMI does not endorse any particular third-party software.

Splash Screen

FEMA Coos County splash screen

The splash screen appears when you first access the map page. You can get more information about the project such as background, additional resources, this help page, and disclaimer by clicking the links. To hide the splash screen and use the map, click the "Click to Continue" button at the bottom of the splash screen.

To view the splash screen again, click the "About" link at the top right of the map.

Pan and Zoom Controls

FEMA Coos County Pan control

Pan and Zoom controls allow you to navigate around the map.

Besides panning north, south, east, and west you can pan NE, NW, SE, SW by clicking between the N, S, E, and W arrows.

Legend - Hide/Show Data Layers

FEMA Coos County legend

The map legend shows all the data layers available for the map. Click here to see the full legend.

Data laters are divided into three sections: FEMA Layers, DOGAMI Layers, and Reference Layers. IMPORTANT! The data section checkbox must be checked for data layers in that section to display. If you toggle on just the data layers in a section without toggling on the section check box, the data will not display.

Map Legend window functionality:

  • Move the legend around on the page by clicking and holding down the cursor, then moving the mouse around to reposition the legend box.
  • Resize the legend by positioning the cursor in the lower right corner of the legend box until the double-arrow cursor appears. Then hold down the cursor while dragging the mouse.
  • Close the legend by clicking the "X" in the upper right corner of the box.
  • Minimize the legend by clicking in the horizontal bar in the upper right of the box.
  • Search for specific data layers by typing a word in the text box at the top of the legend. For example, if you type "tsunami", only layers that have tsunami in the layer name will show in the legend. To clear the Search box, click the small grey "X" to the right of the Search box. Clearing the search box will display all layers.
  • Collapse all layers by clicking on the double left-pointing arrow at the top of the legend box.
  • Expand all layers by clicking on the double down-pointing arrow at the top of the legend box.

Scale Bar

The scale bar provides an approximate scale in miles for the map. To change the scale, use the Pan and Zoom Controls.

Latitude and Longitude

The latitude and longitude of the cursor's current position on the map are shown in the lower left corner of the map.

A red box on the small outline map of the area in the lower right corner shows the extent of the large map area. You can click-and-drag in the location map area to change the focus of the large map. Click on the small arrow to close the overview map

The data layers can be displayed on four base maps: Not all base maps will display at all scales (see chart below). If a base map is not displayed at a given scale, the text "Map data not yet available" is shown instead. The images below show the same area using each of the base maps.

Banner Area Controls

Controls at the top right of the map allow you to zoom into an address, get information on specific features, view the legend, print the current extent, and open the splash screen.

Find an address: Use this tool to zoom to an location by entering an address or ZIP code (select the mailbox icon) or geographic coordinates (select the pushpin icon).

In the example below, the user has entered "200 Main St., Portland" in the Address fields. The results show two possibilities, one on SW Main Street and one on SE main Street. The map has zoomed to the second (last) found possible address, but if the user clicks on the other address, the map will zoom to that address. The score indicates the "confidence" that the address is the one entered by the user.

Identify FEMA layers: Use this tool to identify specific FEMA hazard layer features on the map. Click on the icon to display the Identify toolbox. In Identify mode, select the tool you want to use. Click on a point or use the mouse to draw a shape. The data layers included under the point or shape are displayed in the Identify window.

Example - Point: In the example shown below, the user has clicked on a point (the red dot above the Identify window) on the map. A list of the FEMA Hazard Layers data under that point is shown. If the user mouses over a result, the layer is highlighted on the map with a red outline.

If you mouse over the layer in the Identify popup box, that layer's boundary is highlighted with a red line.

Example - Shape. In the example shown below, the user has selected the Rectangle tool and, by dragging the mouse, drawn a box on the map (the red box above the Identify window).

Next, the user clicks on the Results icon to see a list of data layers within the boxed area. If the user mouses over a result, that layer polygon is highlighted on the map. Here the user has moused over the "Special Flood Hazard Area - Coastal," causing that polygon to be outlined in red.

Map Legend: Display the Map Legend window if it is not already open.

FEMA Coos County Print icon

Print: Print the current extent of the map. Clicking the icon causes a popup box to appear. Optionally, enter a name and subtitle for your map view, then click the "Print " button to display a Print dialog box. Choose printer settings as you normally would for your printer setup.
