Description:
Abstract:
The Geothermal Resources Information Layer for Oregon - Release 1 (GTILO - Release 1) is a geospatial database system that stores and manages Oregon's existing geothermal resource information. The compilation of this data is the latest effort by the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries to provide visual and historical data of Oregon's geothermal systems. The data sets are hot and warm springs, geothermal prospect wells, geothermal wells, and low-temperature well, which provide a framework for regional spatial analysis. The power of GIS (geographic information system format) facilitates easy access to the database and analysis for development and exploration purposes. Data sets for Known Geothermal Resource Areas and Direct-Use Application areas are included as ancillary information. A centralized database for the geothermal data in Oregon provides a powerful tool that the geothermal industry can use to reevaluate earlier geothermal exploration efforts and develop new approaches that may find hidden geothermal resources in the state.
Purpose:
This data and the MapServer web application in which it is used were developed to illustrate and investigate the spatial patterns and previous geothermal exploration activities in Oregon. Historical overview of Oregon's geothermal systems provide requesit background for future development of geothermal power (generation of electricity) and residental/commercial direct-use applications.

In July 2006 the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (The "Department") received a subcontract from the Oregon Department of Energy to compile the Department's geothermal data (see below) and update existing geothermal inventories. The prime contractor for this project is GeoPowering the West, a U.S. Department of Energy program to promote geothermal usage in the Western United States.
The geothermal data in GTILO-Release 1 has been obtained from unpublished, published records of the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries and its Mineral Land Reclamation and Regulation program. We wish to acknowledge the University of Idaho, Department of Geological Sciences, Moscow, Idaho (EPSCoR "Biocomplexity in Extreme Environments" webpage (http://www.uidaho.edu/biogeochemistry/data.html) for use of their spring data from Alvord Hot Springs, Mickey Hot Springs, and Borax Hot Springs. The Great Basin Center for Energy Research, University of Nevada, Reno, also kindly allowed use to extract data from their geothermal database. Each source is identified by a reference identification code where their data is used.

Attribute Accuracy:
Attribute Accuracy Report:
The accuracy of this data is dependent on (1) detail level (e.g. location information) of the source material and (2) interpretation procedures for capturing that source. Field checking of the data was not performed.
Quantitative Attribute Accuracy Assessment:
Attribute Accuracy Value: Unknown
Attribute Accuracy Explanation: See above
Logical Consistency Report: No topology. Because the data are from multiple sources, terminology varies and similar characteristics may be described differently.
Completeness Report:
Although the data set for GTILO-Release 1 is statewide in extent, coverage varies from county to county because the data collection was contingent upon a variety of published and unpublished literature sources or research programs with which we have not established ties.
Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report:
There are two sources of error associated with the transfer of location description form township/range/section/quarter/quarter to latitude/longitude. First, location descriptions were usually reported as township/range/section/quarter/quarter. The actual well location could be anywhere within the quarter/quarter section, or at least +/- 279 meters (assuming that all sections are the same size and shape, but not all sections are the same size or shape). Second, a well location was transferred to a U.S. Geological Survey Digital Raster Image of 1:24,000-scale quadrangle. This process involves plotting the well's location and directly comparing the location with the corresponding U.S. Geological Survey 1:24,000-scale digital quadrangle map. The map acted as a guide to adjust well locations for topographic features and in this situation, adjusting the wells location involved best judgement. Therefore, the accuracy of this data is dependent on the level of detail of the source material and the interpretation procedures for capturing that source.

Process Description:
The data structure for each point and polygon coverage was created in MapInfo Pro, Version 7.0; each coverage was in turn converted into a ESRI shape file using MapInfo's Universal Transformer function thereby permitting wider access to the data. Coverages are projected into Oregon Lambert 97 International feet projection.
Thermal springs and Low Temperature Wells data are included here that have temperatures of 68°F (20°C) and above. (The lower limit is based on a minimum temperature of 10°C above mean annual air temperature.) The information that has been collected on the location, temperature, and other features of thermal springs and low temperature wells has been compiled from various sources. These datasets may contain some errors, but care has been taken to prevent duplications and omissions, so far as possible. The sources of information are indicated by reference identification codes, which correspond to the same codes in a separate annotated bibliography (see http://www.oregon.geology.com).
Hot and Warm Spring location data for Oregon- In completing the hot and warm spring inventory, all available published data prior to and including Black (1994) were utilized. Then, digital information on Oregon's thermal springs (and well data) was checked in the following databases:
- Geo-Heat Center's Western States Geothermal Databases CD.
- Southern Methodist University (SMU) Geothermal Laboratory's Western Geothermal Areas Database of the U.S.
- Geothermal information from the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
- The Great Basin Center for Geothermal Research, University of Nevada, Reno.
Each thermal spring's geospatial coordinates (latitude and longitude was checked for accuracy by overlaying with mosaicked U.S. Geological Survey, 1:24,000-scale digital raster graphic (DRG) of scanned topographic quadrangle maps. If the heads-up display revealed a discrepancy between the geospatial position of the spring and the spring's mapped location on a quadrangle map, then the spring's coordinates were modified to match the map overlay.
As mentioned above, thermal springs are included here that have temperatures of 68° F (20° C) and above. However, the use of the term "warm" in the spring's name has led to listing them in this database. In addition, a characteristic of thermal springs in Oregon is that they usually represent a group of affiliated springs. Thus, the number of thermal springs in GTILO-Release 1 is not a definite figure. The reason for saying this is that in previous studies, it was customary to count each spring group but not every spring in that group. Examples of thermal springs that constitute "one" group of hot springs with many separate springs in it are: Borax Springs, Mickey Springs, and Alvord Springs. However, the University of Idaho (see Data Set Credit) used a different approach and counted each spring in those spring groups. For this compilation, we did the same but only when a spring, which would have been otherwise included in a group, was separately shown on a U.S. Geological Survey 1:24,000-scale quadrangle map.
Geothermal Prospect Well data set is the addition of 1019 geothermal prospect wells drilled in Oregon. Purpose of the data set is to provide the public with geothermal exploration data from those wells, most of which are temperature observation data gathered during the 1970s and 1980s. This data are contained in the unpublished permit files from the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries' Mineral Land Reclamation and Regulation program. We cannot guarantee that this data set is complete or accurate. Many wells had only cadastral location data. Converting this information into a spatial GIS dataset involved heads-up digitizing on the screen based on mosaicked U.S. Geological Survey, 1:24,000-scale digital raster graphic (DRG) of scanned topographic quadrangle maps.
Geothermal Well data set is the addition of approximately 129 geothermal wells (drilled or proposed) in Oregon. Purpose of the data set is to provide the public with geothermal exploration data from those wells. These wells were drilled in order to gather geothermal observation data and many have accompanying unpublished reports and geophyiscal logs. This data are contained in the unpublished permit files of the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries' Mineral Land Reclamation and Regulation program.
Black, G.L., 1994 (Low-temperature geothermal database for Oregon: Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries Open-File Report O-94-08 178 p., 5 location maps.) compiled a low-temperature geothermal databse, of which we have utiliized their well data set (thermal water 20°C and above) "as is" in this compilation.
Known Geothermal Resource Areas (KGRA's) - This coverage (vector polygon file) shows the area of significant lateral extent favorable for discovery and development of local sources of low-temperature (90°C and above) water. Areas are defined on the basis of thermal springs, wells, and geohydrologic settings generally favorable for recovery of thermal water. Existing knowledge does not in general permit the inference that thermal water may be found everywhere within the depicted areas, nor do the boundaries represent certain knowledge of the areal extend of the geothermal systems. KGRAs were derived from Classification of Public Land Valuable for Geothermal Steam and Associated Geothermal Resources, U.S. Geologic Survey Circular 647 (1971), but the source of the geospatial coverage is unknown and provided here "as is." It is not complete and as such, it will continue to undergo review, revision, or possibly eliminated.
Direct-Use Areas - This coverage shows areas which, because of their geologic history and similarity to areas with know geothermal/hydrothermal systems, are expected to contain geothermal resources suitable for direct heat applications (20°C and above) . Purpose of the coverage is to provide a visual representation of existing geothermal resources and potential areas for residential and commercial direct use applications. This spatial information was derived from an unknown source and provided here "as is." It is not complete and as such, it will continue to undergo review, revision, or possibly eliminated.
