Description:

Abstract:
The Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI) has completed three years of a planned six-year project to digitally compile geologic data for the entire state. This effort brings together the best available geologic mapping from state and federal agency sources, student thesis work, and consultants. The project will create a new statewide digitally-compiled geologic map coverage that will become a component of the Geoscience Theme within the Oregon Framework Themes. The Oregon Framework Themes effort is coordinated by the Oregon Geospatial Enterprise Office, Oregon Department of Administrative Services.
Purpose:
To assemble the best available geologic map information for Oregon by integrating the work of many individual geologic mappers into a vector digital data set stored in geographic information system (GIS) format with links to a relational database.
Supplemental Information:
This release of version 3 includes the Northeast, Southeast, and Central Oregon Compilation data sets and is the third of six annual releases that will ultimately provide statewide geologic data for Oregon. A total of 187 separate geologic maps (or existing digital data sets) are integrated to provide the best available geologic coverage. Original hardcopy paper maps were scanned, converted from raster to vector format and the data structured according to a geologic data model adopted by the Oregon Geoscience Committee, part of the Oregon Framework Theme development process. This data set is the result of integrating parts or all of 187 separate reference maps and the accuracy varies according to the original reference map scale (1:6,000 to 1:500,000). Attribute accuracy is very good for both the spatial and tabular databases. Numerous queries were run to check accuracy and consistency of attribute information. Queries were run separately and to compare the data sets against each other. An iterative process was run to find discrepancies and then corrections were made to the respective data sets to achieve consistency.

Attribute Accuracy Explanation:
A check of attribute accuracy was made on the G_Map_Unit polygon file for northeast Oregon. A sampling of 2% of the total polygons were inspected for their map unit label attribute. The polygon file was checked against each reference map image (or data) and a tally made of attribute errors.

Attribute Accuracy Explanation: Queries run during a process to assign lithology merge unit labels found 1.6% of the total records with some discrepancy.

Logical Consistency Report:
MapInfo Professional version 8.0 does not establish data set topology. MapInfo tools can check regions (polygons) for misalignment errors such as gaps (slivers), polygon overlaps, self intersections, and duplicate nodes. If found, these errors were corrected.
Completeness Report:
This digital dataset delineates the geologic features of eastern and central Oregon. The data is an integration of 187 reference geologic maps (or digital data sets). A data structure was developed that preserves the original interpretations of each mapper while also presenting a coherent stratigraphic and lithologic framework for this portion of Oregon. This is accomplished by assigning geologic and lithologic merge unit labels to all of the different source map units, creating a logical seamlessness for the map. Logical seamlessness exists when a number of source datasets are integrated into one and the resulting disjointed features are not edgematched (modified geometrically) to fit together. Instead, these features are associated through attributing (FGDC, 1995). The merge unit labels are based on the current understanding of the geologic history of the area, as well as any new geochemical analyses. Professional geologists, who have been working in and have a broad understanding of the geology of a particular area of the state, assign the compilation merge unit labels.

Horizontal positional accuracy of this data equates to the original reference map scale. The range of map scales used varies from 1:6,000 to 1:500,000. This data set is predominantly the result of many raster-to-vector (R2V) data conversions performed on scanned images of paper maps. Raster scanning of paper maps and the R2V process introduce some horizontal accuracy displacement. This displacement has not been quantified.

The spatial data sets were checked by overlaying with U.S. Geological Survey 1:100,000 scale digital raster graphics (DRG). 1:100,000 scale USGS DRGs were mosaicked to provide a base map for this spatial data set. As each scanned map image was georeferenced and R2V data conversion performed, it was checked visually for positional fit on the 1:100,000 scale topographic base map. Accuracy of the data conversions to the 1:100,000 topographic base was not quantified.
