One of the most common and devastating geologic hazards in
The Statewide Landslide Information Database of Oregon (SLIDO) was created to improve our understanding of the landslide hazard in
Project Objective(s)
- identify previously mapped landslide deposits statewide
- improve the abilities of communities to begin effective landslide management and risk reduction activities
- recommend future improvements and updates to the database
Approach
In this study, we extracted existing landslide, debris/alluvial fan, and colluvium/talus (landslide related features) polygons from 257 studies to populate the initial release of SLIDO. This GIS compilation of landslide areas was derived primarily from published geologic reports and geologic hazard studies by the U.S. Geologic Survey (USGS), the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI), and in lesser amounts thesis studies and regional studies by the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) in the state. A full list of the references, original map scales, and reference identification codes are listed below. Several valuable existing compilations of geologic mapping were used to accomplish the task, including the Oregon Geologic Data Compilation release 4, DOGAMI IMS-24, and several regional geologic hazard studies by DOGAMI.
The method employed to identify landslide areas in this study included only the compilation of existing data. We used GIS operations to select areas mapped as landslides and/or landslide related features from existing digital compilations and digitized landslide polygons from original paper maps to develop the database of identified landslide areas.
Limitations
SLIDO was created through the compilation of the best data available. Several limitations are worth noting, and underscore that any hazard map is generally useful for regional applications but should not be used as an alternative to site-specific studies in critical areas.
- Although it every effort was made to ensure that digitization and database entry were accurate and complete, no effort was made to verify the original data on which the compilation is based. Geologic data in the less populated eastern portions of the state were particularly limited in terms of scale, for example the 1:500,000 scale geologic map of the state was used in some locations.
- As previously discussed, the developed database is from original sources that vary in scale, original purpose of mapping, available tools at the time of mapping, and background and interpretation by original mapper. These factors all affect the level of detail and accuracy of the landslides.
- We neither collected nor analyzed any new data to create this map. Therefore, this database is a snapshot view of the current data.
Potential Uses of the Data
The primary purpose of this consolidation of previously mapped landslides is to provide a base level of landslide information statewide. In general, the database should serve as useful tool for differentiating areas of higher and lower hazards. This spatial information is basic to emergency and land use applications; some common uses are to:
- Identify vulnerable areas that may require planning considerations
- Estimate potential losses from specific hazard events (before or after a disaster hits)
- Decide how to allocate resources for most effective and efficient response and recovery
- Prioritize mitigation measures that need to be implemented to reduce future losses
